Juan Fernández Navarrete, also known as El Mudo, was a Spanish Mannerist painter who overcame his hearing impairment to become a renowned artist. He received early art training from notable figures and traveled extensively through Italy. Navarrete became a pupil and assistant of Titian in Venice before being appointed as the king's painter in Madrid. He worked on numerous paintings for the Escorial, including famous works such as the "Nativity" and "Abraham Receiving the Three Angels," showcasing his bold design and rich color palette. Navarrete earned the nickname "the Spanish Titian" due to his exceptional artistry.
