Auguste Rodin was a talented and gifted French sculptor who gained worldwide attention for his bronze figurines and portraits. A forerunner of modern sculpture, Rodin’s distinctive artistic style interestingly developed quite late in his life. Traditionally schooled, he started his art career with an academic approach and desired for only academic recognition. However, a visit to Italy and exposure to works by Donatello and Michelangelo changed the course of his career. Some of the most iconic works of his lifetime include, ‘The Age of Bronze’, ‘The Thinker’, ‘The Kiss’ and ‘The Burghers of Calais’. Rodin broke the traditional, formulaic sculpting technique and replaced it with unexpected realism. Though his work met with much criticism and controversy by governmental bodies, the artistic community greatly favoured his skill. Towards the end of his career, Rodin became one of the most prominent French sculptors, gaining worldwide recognition as an artist. Till date, he remains as one of the most celebrated sculptors that the world witnessed.
