Louise Bourgeois was a renowned French–American painter and sculptor. Starting her career as a printmaker, she made a name with her large-scale sculptures and art installations. Born in Paris, into a family that restored ancient tapestry, she studied art at various academies in her city. She later married American art historian Robert Goldwater and moved to the U.S. She worked with various artists and presented shows of her creations. Though she did not belong to any movement, her work had hints of Surrealism and feminist art. Bourgeois, however, did not like her work to be called “feminist.” Nevertheless, much of her work, such as ‘Femme Maison’ and ‘Arch of Hysteria,’ displayed the feminine form. Her artwork came to be known for its personal themes, drawn mainly from her troubled childhood and the effects of her father’s domineering behavior and infidelity. Her sculptures exhibited biomorphic forms, with the use of unconventional material, such as latex, resin, and cloth. Her art was not limited to a particular style or medium, which made it difficult to classify it with a label. Thus, she received fame relatively late in her career. She had been part of many retrospective shows and had earned numerous honors. Bourgeois died at 98 and was creatively active till the final years of her life.
