She has served in various high-ranking positions in both the Carter and Clinton administrations, including as a U.S. Representative. Shalala is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and has established herself as a respected leader in the academic field, holding a PhD and working as a professor before assuming key roles at Hunter College, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and the University of Miami.
