(Lawyer) Wendell Willkie, an American lawyer and corporate executive, led Commonwealth & Southern Corporation (C&S) in the 1930s. He gained recognition for opposing the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) during this time. Willkie switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party in 1939, and in 1940, he was chosen as the Republican nominee for president. Although he was defeated by Franklin D. Roosevelt, Willkie stood by the president during World War II and pushed for assistance to Britain.
