Edwin Bustillos

Edwin Bustillos García, a Mexican agricultural engineer and human rights activist from the Sierra Madre region, transitioned from a forestry-development project supported by the World Bank to addressing humanitarian concerns in the region. His focus included combatting drug trafficking and other illegal activities impacting the local community. In 1992, he established the Consejo Asesor Sierra Madre, an organization committed to environmental conservation and protecting the indigenous way of life. Bustillos was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize in 1996 for his work in preserving land in the Sierra Madre Occidental.
