Alex Smith is an American football quarterback currently signed to the Washington Redskins of the National Football League. He previously played for the NFL teams San Francisco 49ers, which had selected him as the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, and the Kansas City Chiefs. In 2011, he helped the 49ers to their first NFC West division title as well as their first NFC Championship Game appearance since 1997. After being traded to the Chiefs, he led the team to the playoff in 2013 and helped secure a playoff win in 2015. He was named to three Pro Bowls during his five seasons with the Chiefs. Smith, who had an injury-ridden career, sustained a life-threatening compound fracture injury to his right leg during his first season with the Redskins in 2018 and is currently placed on the team's reserve list.
