Sandy Dennis was an American film, theatre and television actress. She was best known for her Oscar-winning role in the movie ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ Typical of many actresses of her era, she had many eccentricities that had earned her quite a reputation in show business. Enchanted by acting since a young age, she started her career with school and college plays, moving to New York as a teenager to study acting. Touring with a local production company, she honed her acting skills as a Broadway actress. She was a lifelong proponent of method acting, which also added to her on-stage charisma and paved the way for her film debut. Her acting chops were much appreciated by Hollywood and she made a career out of playing unconventional character roles. At the height of her career in the 1960-70s, she enjoyed much popularity and success, winning two ‘Tony Awards’ alongside an ‘Academy Award’. She also took on sporadic roles on television, but primarily remained a stage and film actress in her later years. She was also an animal activist and rescued stray cats and gave them a home. She died of cancer, but is still remembered for her memorable performances.
