John Goodman is an American film, television, and stage actor and a recipient of the Golden Globe Award. He rose to fame with the highly successful and widely watched television series Roseanne. Goodman has established himself as one of Hollywood’s most skilled and versatile character actors, capable of playing a wide range of roles with ease. During his school and teenage years, he was an enthusiastic football player and even earned a football scholarship to study at Missouri State University. Unfortunately, due to injuries, he was unable to continue playing football, so he moved to New York City in search of acting opportunities. After a period of struggle in New York, doing odd jobs and appearing in commercials, he made his film debut with Eddie Macon's Run (1983), in which he played a minor role. Since then, he has appeared in over 50 films, including several Disney productions and multiple collaborations with the Coen brothers. Some of his notable films include Argo, The Flintstones, Coyote Ugly, and The Artist. Goodman has spoken openly about his past struggles with alcoholism, which he has since overcome.
