Lana Turner

Description: (One of the Highest Paid Actresses in the United States During the 1940s)

Lana Turner was an American actress popular during the 1940s and 1950s. Discovered at a drugstore, she made her screen debut in They Won't Forget, where she gained fame as the "Sweater Girl." Soon, offers poured in, leading to significant roles in Dramatic School, Love Finds Andy Hardy, Ziegfeld Girl, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Honky Tonk, and Johnny Eager. Turner truly came into her own with films such as The Postman Always Rings Twice, Diane, Another Time, Another Place, Portrait in Black, and Imitation of Life. Her personal life, however, was turbulent. She was married eight times and battled alcoholism. In a highly publicized incident, her longtime boyfriend, mobster Johnny Stompanato, was stabbed to death by her daughter, Cheryl Crane, during one of their violent arguments. Cheryl was acquitted after the court ruled it was justifiable homicide. Turner received her biggest break starring in Peyton Place, earning an Academy Award nomination for her role. She continued to appear in films until 1980 and had a recurring role as Jacqueline Perrault on the TV series Falcon Crest. She later published her autobiography, Lana: The Lady, The Legend, The Truth, before passing away after a long battle with cancer.
