George Randolph Scott was an American film actor considered to be one of the most recognized Western stars in Hollywood. With a career spanning from 1928 to 1962, the handsome leading man featured in a variety of genres, including crime, social dramas, musicals, war films, comedies, adventures, horror, and fantasy movies. However, he is best remembered for playing Western heroes. Scott was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina in a rich family. After serving in the American military in France during the World War I, he studied at Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of North Carolina, eventually graduating with a degree in textile engineering and manufacturing. Around 1927, Scott developed an interest in acting and flew to Los Angeles, ultimately landing a minor role in George O'Brien’s 1928 film ‘Sharp Shooters’. He then went on to work with numerous acclaimed screen directors, including Rouben Mamoulian, Henry King, Henry Hathaway, Edwin L. Marin, and Budd Boetticher. The actor also worked with a varied array of leading women, from Mae West and Marlene Dietrich to Irene Dunne and Shirley Temple. Besides acting, he was an excellent athlete who was passionate about swimming, baseball, football, and horse racing. In 1987, Scott died of lung and heart ailments, leaving behind his second wife and two adopted children.
