Charles Kennedy

Description: (British Leader of the Liberal Democrats)

Charles Kennedy was a Scottish politician with a successful tenure as a 'Liberal Democrat' leader from 1999 to 2006 and a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1983 to 2015. His political career started when he became the youngest elected MP. He was just 15 when he joined the 'Labour Party.' He then joined the 'Social Democratic Party' (SDP). He eventually led the 'Liberal Democrats,' after the ‘SDP’ and the 'Liberal' party merged. He had also served as the 'Liberal' president for 4 years. When the former 'Liberal Democrat Party' (LDP) leader, Paddy Ashdown, stepped down in 1999 and Kennedy took over, their leadership styles were regularly under scrutiny. Kennedy was labeled as a more conversational and relaxed leader and was called "Chatshow Charlie." Under his leadership, ‘LDP’ increased its number of seats in the 'House of Commons' to the highest level since 1923. Kennedy was one of the oppositions for the Iraq War. His political downfall started when he was termed an “alcoholic” by the media. Additionally, ‘LDP’ lost an easy campaign in 2005, due to Kennedy's strategy. Thus, he was forced to resign in 2006. Upon his resignation, Kennedy acted as an ‘LDP’ backbencher. He, however, was re-elected but lost to Ian Blackford of the ‘SNP’ at the 2015 general election. Kennedy died from an illness, apparently linked to his drinking problem, shortly after. A charismatic, witty, and approachable public speaker, Kennedy had appeared on several news, quiz, and current-affairs shows during his leadership tenure.
