William "Bull" Halsey Jr. was an American Navy admiral who is remembered for his exploits during World War II. He remains one of only four US Navy officers to have been awarded the five-star Fleet Admiral honor. He was initially part of the Great White Fleet that circumnavigated the world. During World War I, Halsey commanded USS Shaw. After becoming a naval aviator, he commanded the carrier USS Saratoga and was soon made Rear Admiral. During World War II, Halsey commanded the South Pacific Area. He led the Allies in the Battle for Guadalcanal and the campaign in the Solomon Islands. During the Battle of Leyte Gulf, he served as Admiral Nimitz's tactical commander and was assigned the task of destroying the Japanese fleet. He led the US Navy till the Japanese surrendered at the end of the campaign of Okinawa. Post-retirement, he had been the president of the International Telecommunications Laboratories.
