Julius Nieuwland

Belgian-born American chemist, professor and Holy Cross Priest Julius Nieuwland is most noted for discovering the chemical compound Lewisite that was later developed as a chemical warfare weapon; and for successfully polymerizing acetylene into divinylacetylene that led Dupont to invent neoprene. He served as professor at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, and established the peer-reviewed journal American Midland Naturalist.
