Oleg Vladimirovich Deripaska is a well-known Russian oligarch and philanthropist, who founded and own ‘Basic Element’ (erstwhile ‘Siberian Aluminium’), counted among the largest diversified industrial groups in Russia. He also serves as the CEO of the sixth largest aluminium company in the world, ‘United Company RUSAL’, and owns and controls the Russian energy-related company ‘En+ Group’. A physics graduate from ‘Moscow State University’, this intelligent and agile entrepreneur forayed into the industrial scene initially as a metals broker with speciality in trading aluminium and thereafter started dealing with machinery, agribusiness, energy and financial services. ‘Sibirsky Aluminium’ of Deripaska and ‘Millhouse Capital’ of Roman Abramovich formed partnership in 2000 leading to formation of ‘Rusal’ which again merged with ‘Glencore International AG’ and ‘SUAL Group’ in 2007 to form ‘United Company RUSAL’ with Deripaska as its chairman. During the financial crisis of 2007-08 amidst heavy and rising debts, Deripaska lost much of his wealth that was estimated to be around $28 billion, thus slipping from the position of richest man in Russia. According to Forbes, his estimated wealth as of May 2017 is $5.2 billion. His humanitarian efforts saw him founding the largest charitable foundation of Russia, ‘Volnoe Delo’. He has close association with the incumbent President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
