Adam Schiff is an American lawyer and politician who currently serves as the United States House Representative for California's 28th congressional district (since 2013). Prior to this, the Democratic Party member represented California's 27th congressional district from 2001 to 2003 and the 29th congressional district from 2003 to 2013. He also serves as the chairman of the United States House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, a position to which he was appointed in 2019. In this position, he helped lead the impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump post the Trump-Ukraine scandal. In 2020, as the Lead impeachment manager, he presented the impeachment case against President Donald Trump during the first impeachment trial in the Senate. It ended with the acquittal of the president. Earlier, the Stanford University and Harvard Law School graduate began his career as a law clerk and then became Assistant United States Attorney in Los Angeles where he gained fame for successfully prosecuting the first FBI agent ever to be indicted for espionage. Thereafter, he completed a four-year term as California State Senator from the 21st district and then defeated James E. Rogan – in what was the most expensive House race ever at the time – to become the U.S. House Representative for California's 27th congressional district. He is also on a leave of absence from the House Appropriations Committee which he joined in 2007. He is currently its ex officio member.
