Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., the elder brother of U.S President, John F. Kennedy and son of Joseph P. Kennedy, was a US Navy lieutenant. Joseph was the only Kennedy who wasn’t involved with politics. Even though, his father wanted him to be the President of the United States, Kennedy Jr.’s had decided to join the Navy. He left law in final year to train in Navy, and was awarded his wings in May 1942. Starting with Caribbean patrols, Joe was finally sent to England to fly ‘B-24’s with the ‘British Naval Command. However, he couldn’t go far in his career as he was killed in 1944, after he participated in a secret mission. He was in action during ‘World War II’ when the explosives in his plane detonated. Joseph was honoured with the ‘Navy Cross’ and ‘Air Medal’ after his death. To honour his courage and heroism, the Kennedy family started ‘The Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation’ in 1946. The Foundation supports people with mental disabilities. Kennedy JR.’s younger brother, John F. Kennedy also served the Navy for a brief amount of time before he became the President of the United States.
