He is best known as the spokesperson and lead guitarist of the famous progressive music band Laal. A fierce critic of religious fundamentalism and capitalist exploitation in Pakistan, Rahman won the Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Award in 2012 for his book The Class Structure of Pakistan.
