(Government Official) Born in British India, James Bruce was the son of Thomas Bruce, the 7th Earl of Elgin, who had lost much of his fortunes in buying the “Elgin Marbles.” Educated at Eton, he later rose to be the governor of Jamaica, the governor general of Canada, and the viceroy of India.
