Edmund Sixtus Muskie was a distinguished American politician who held imminent positions in his political career spanning over 3 decades. He was the 58th United States Secretary of State, under President Jimmy Carter. He also served as a United States senator from Maine, as the 64th governor of Maine, and as a member of the ‘Maine House of Representatives’ from the 110th district. He was also a ‘Democratic Party’ candidate for the position of vice president during the 1968 United States presidential election. Prior to his elaborate political career, Muskie practiced law. He also served the ‘United States Naval Reserve’ for a while during the Second World War. He created history by becoming the first Maine ‘Democratic Party’ governor in almost a century. During his tenure as the governor of Maine, he emphasised on the economic expansionism and environmental issues of the region and instated environmental provisions. A senator for over 2 decades, Muskie aided in the passage of the ‘Clean Air Act’ of 1970, launched the ‘Clean Water Act’ of 1972, backed the ‘Civil Rights Act’ of 1964, supported the creation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and patronized New Federalism. He also delivered the 1976 ‘State of the Union Response’ and set up the United States budget process.
