George J. Mitchell

George J. Mitchell is an American politician, lawyer, author, and diplomat. He has served as a Senator (1980-1995) and Senate Majority Leader (1989-1995). He was a special advisor and envoy for the ‘Peace Process in Northern Ireland’ and played an important role in creating the ‘Belfast / Good Friday Agreement.’ He was also a special envoy for the ‘Middle East Peace.’ Born and raised in Maine, he faced hardships in his early life and studied law at a night school. While practicing law, he also got involved in politics and later became a Senator. As a Senator, he was voted ‘the most respected member of the Senate’ by bipartisan senior congressmen for 6 successive years. He is recipient of numerous awards, including the ‘Presidential Medal of Freedom,’ the highest civilian honor given by the US government, for his contribution to ‘Northern Ireland Peace.’ He was the Chancellor of the ‘Queen’s University,’ Belfast, Northern Ireland, for 10 years, and also served as the chairman of ‘The Walt Disney Company’ and ‘DLA Piper Law Firm.’ He is the co-founder of ‘Bipartisan Policy Center’ and founder of the ‘Mitchell Institute.’
