Harald V of Norway is the King of Norway who has been reigning since January 1991. He was born in Norway in the late 1930s just before the Second World War, and came second in the line of succession after his father. He spent the World War years in the United States and returned to Norway in 1945, where he was enrolled at a public school to show solidarity with his countrymen. He was the first prince to do so. Later, he attended the Norwegian Military Academy and Balliol College, Oxford. After completing his education, he began to work closely with his father, King Olav V of Norway. Harald V ascended the Norwegian throne at the age of 54 and implemented many reforms, making the royal household more open to his countrymen and the national media. A keen sportsman, he continues to compete in international sailing events until today.
