(President of the British East India Company Settlement in Fort St. George, at Madras, India) Elihu Yale, a British-American colonial administrator, worked for the East India Company in India and eventually became President of the settlement. After being removed from his position due to corruption charges, he returned to Britain with a fortune which he used for philanthropy and art collecting. He is best known for being the primary benefactor of Yale College, now Yale University.
