He eventually became known after he co-founded as well as became the managing partner of The Yucaipa Companies, LLC, a private equity and venture capital firm, which invests in manufacturing, retail and distribution. He is also a part owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins, of the National Hockey League. In 2019, Burkle was also announced as the new lead investor of the Sacramento Republic FC, of the Major League Soccer. He is regularly featured in the list of the richest people on the earth.
