Anna Neagle was an English theater and film actor, singer, and dancer, best known for her portrayal of historical figures such as Queen Victoria and Nell Gwyn. Born in Essex and raised in Glasgow, she was interested in performing arts ever since she was a child. She made her stage debut at the age of 13, playing a dancer in a musical. She got her first major breakthrough in 1931, when she bagged one of the main roles in the ‘West End’ musical ‘Stand Up and Sing.’ In 1930, she made her film debut with ‘The Chinese Bungalow.’ In 1932, she appeared in the film ‘Goodnight, Vienna,’ which was her first film with director Herbert Wilcox, with whom she went on to have many successful future collaborations. In 1937, she appeared in the lead role in the film titled ‘Victoria the Great,’ which is still remembered as one of her best performances. In the years that followed, she appeared in many American films, too. In the later phase of her career, she appeared in films such as ‘The Lady is a Square’ and ‘My Teenage Daughter.’
