Augusto Boal was a Brazilian theatre practitioner and drama theorist. He studied at Columbia University in New York and returned to Brazil to work at the Arena Theatre in São Paulo. He directed numerous classical dramas and made a name for himself. He founded the Theatre of the Oppressed and developed legislative theatre. He won the UNESCO Pablo Picasso Medal.
