Louis Francis ‘Lou’ Cristillo, better known by his stage name Lou Costello, was a famous American burlesque comedian and actor of stage, television, radio and films. He is well-known for the comedy double act of Abbott and Costello along with Bud Abbott. The duo gradually rose to prominence and starting from 1940 flourished as the most popular comedy team for over one and a half decades. A school dropout, Costello wanted to make it big as an actor so he hitchhiked to Hollywood where he initially worked as a labourer, extra and stuntman. He then started to work in burlesque. Around this time he came across Bud Abbott, who fitted in place of Costello’s regular straight man when the latter failed to show up. Thus began a new journey as the duo gradually made a name performing their routines in Hollywood films, radio and Broadway. Their patter routine ‘Who's on First?’ is counted among the best all-time comedy routines. They featured in several notable works including popular films like ‘Buck Privates’, ‘Who Done It?’, and ‘Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein’, but they broke up amicably in 1957. Costello then returned to his good old stand-up acts, but succumbed to a heart attack after a couple of years before his only starring film without Abbott ‘The 30 Foot Bride of Candy Rock’ released.
