Description:
(Canadian Politician and 35th Speaker of the House of Commons)
Andrew Scheer is a Canadian politician, who from 2017 to 2020, served as the leader of the opposition and the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. Born into a middle-class family, he graduated from Immaculata High School. He then attended the University of Ottawa, from where he pursued a BA programme. Alongside his college education, he became active in the local politics, working at several positions with Conservative Leaders. He eventually contested the federal elections in 2005 as Conservative candidate from the riding of Regina and won the elections, defeating a longstanding incumbent. He quickly gained several positions within the party, and later became the Speaker of the House of Commons, in 2011. In 2016, following the defeat of Conservative Party in federal elections, he filed his candidacy for the position of leader of the opposition party and in 2017, he was elected as the leader. Despite his flamboyant persona and leadership skills, he could not manage to secure a victory for his party in the 2019 elections, where the Conservative Party lost, albeit with a small margin. In late 2019, he announced that he would be resigning from his position as the leader of the Conservative Party.
