Frances Hodgson Burnett was a British-born American novelist and playwright, known especially for her children’s books. Born in the middle of the nineteenth century, she developed a knack of telling stories early in her life. But after the family’s financial condition forced them to move to the USA, where too they continued to struggle, she decided to use her story-telling skill to financially help her family. At nineteen, she had her first work published in a British women’s magazine. Soon, she was earning enough not only to move her family to better location and finance her trip to England, but also to set up her nuptial home. Eventually, she became a devoted mother of two sons; yet continued to write prolifically, publishing her first novel at twenty-eight, later writing children’s classics like ‘Little Lord Fauntleroy', 'A Little Princess' and 'The Secret Garden'. A prolific writer, she continued to write well into her seventies.
