Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor

Description: (Holy Roman Emperor)

Frederick III was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1452 until his death in 1493. He was also the first emperor of the House of Habsburg and the fourth House of Habsburg member to become the king of Germany (as Frederick IV). He was the last emperor to be crowned in Rome. Initially, he had also served as the duke of Inner Austria (Styria, Carinthia and Carniola). He also served as a regent of the Duchy of Austria (as Frederick V). Though he did not adopt an aggressive policy, his regime saw the expansion of his empire, especially after Burgundy was annexed to the kingdom after a marital alliance between Mary, the daughter of Charles the Bold of Burgundy, and his own son, Maximilian. Following his death, due to complications from a gangrene operation, he was succeeded by his son, who ruled as Maximilian I.
