John Singer Sargent

Description: (American Expatriate Artist and One of the Leading Portrait Painters of His Generation)

John Singer Sargent was an American expatriate artist who is remembered as one of the most talented painters of his time. His creations include innumerable oil paintings, watercolor paintings, sketches, and charcoal drawings. Although he was born in Florence, he was trained in London and traveled the length and breadth of the world for his work. His creation titled ‘Portrait of Madame X’ was considered one of his best and also one of his most scandalous and criticized works. Though associated with a lot of men and women, Sargent was a bachelor all his life and was also rumored to be homosexual. In his later life, he moved away from portraits and concentrated on mural painting. Some of his best works were ‘Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose,’ ‘The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit,’ ‘Lady Agnew of Lochnaw,’ and ‘El Jaleo.’ He had painted portraits of many eminent personalities, such as the family members of Jewish art dealer Asher Wertheimer and Robert Louis Stevenson. His art had traces of the Impressionistic style.

He died of heart disease in 1925 but is still revered as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
