Marshall McLuhan was a Canadian philosopher, professor, and public intellectual, best known for his work in the field of media theory. Marshall was born into a rich family in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He attended the ‘University of Manitoba’ after graduating high school. He was born and raised in a highly religious Catholic family. During his college years, he became interested in religion and its various aspects. Following this, he questioned religion and became an agnostic. He later studied at the ‘University of Cambridge’ after earning a BA and an MA from the ‘University of Montana.’ He served as a professor of English in many universities across the US and the UK before he arrived in Canada in 1946. He was best known for coining terms and phrases such as “global village” and “the medium is the message.” He worked for about 20 years before internet came into existence. In the late 1960s, he was involved in various discourses about the constructive and destructive roles of the media. Following his death in 1980, his popularity declined. However, as the internet became common, his ideas found a new medium. Thereafter, he was hailed as a visionary in the field of media and communication.
