Lady Caroline Lamb

Description: (Aristocrat and Novelist Best Known for Her Gothic Novel ‘Glenarvon’)

Lady Caroline Lamb was an Anglo-Irish novelist, best known for her Gothic novel ‘Glenarvon.’ She is also remembered for her obsessive affair with Lord Byron in 1812. She was married to The Hon. William Lamb, who later became Viscount Melbourne and the prime minister of the U.K. However, she could not become the Viscountess Melbourne because she died before Melbourne earned the title. Her relationship with Byron led to her tumultuous life and even drove her to attempt suicide once. She indulged in extreme behavior to get Byron back in her life after he ended their relationship. She eventually suffered from alcoholism and died in 1828. She is known to have been an equal partner to Byron who could discuss literature effortlessly. Her works were also the first to feature a “Byronic hero,” outside Byron's own work.
