Álvaro Cunhal was a Portuguese politician and communist revolutionary. He is best remembered for opposing the dictatorial regime of the Portuguese corporatist state, Estado Novo. Álvaro Cunhal is also remembered for his service as the Portuguese Communist Party's secretary-general from 31 March 1961 to 5 December 1992.
