Richard Cox had been the bishop of Ely and a major figure of the Protestant Reformation in England. During his tenure as the Oxford chancellor, he made attempts to remove all traces of Roman Catholic texts from the university. He had apparently also been imprisoned under Queen Mary I’s rule.
