Benjamin Millepied is a French dancer and choreographer who was associated with the New York City Ballet for 16 years as a lead dancer initially and later as a soloist. Trained as a dancer since the age of eight, he began focusing on ballet when he was 13. During his tenure at the New York City Ballet, he performed many roles in ballets by top choreographers, and his performances in classics by choreographer George Balanchine earned him much acclaim. After establishing himself as a dancer, he ventured into choreography as well. His name spread far and wide and he choreographed for several top ballet companies worldwide, such as the American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opéra Ballet, and the Mariinsky Ballet. Soon he began getting offers from the film industry and choreographed for the movie ‘Black Swan’, which brought him further into the limelight. In 2011, he retired from dancing and concentrated on choreography. He formed the LA Dance Project to highlight local dances. The company became popular for its innovative works and unique and bold techniques. After he joined the Paris Opéra Ballet as the director of dance, he brought in several changes like making it racially diverse which added to its popularity. Besides dancing and choreography, Benjamin is also involved in several other activities. He collaborated with contemporary composers and founded the multimedia production company the Amoveo Company. He has also directed several short films and commercials in collaboration with other artists.
