Born to a cellist father and a pianist mother, Truls Mork was initially trained in the piano and the violin but chose the cello later. At 21, he was the first Scandinavian to win the International Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition. He almost gave up music due to a central nervous system infection but recovered.
