John Rawls was one of the leading American philosophers who specialized in moral and political philosophy. He was the author of A Theory of Justice, which remains one of the most important publications in political philosophy. Rawls was awarded the Schock Prize for Logic and Philosophy, as well as the National Humanities Medal. In addition to his philosophical career, Rawls served in the United States Army during World War II, including service in the Pacific, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. He left the military after witnessing the devastation caused by the bombing of Hiroshima. Upon leaving the army, Rawls continued his education and earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He later taught at Harvard University, where he remained for around 40 years.
