A part of the imperial family of Ethiopia, Mengesha Seyoum had been the governor of Arsi and Sidamo and the governor-general of Tigray. An Ethiopian Democratic Union politician, he had also served as the minister of public works and communications. He went into exile after being ousted by the Derg.
