Llywelyn ab Iorwerth, also known as Llywelyn the Great, was a medieval Welsh ruler who controlled Wales for 45 years using a mix of military action and diplomacy. By 1200, he had solidified his authority over Gwynedd and later extended his influence into southern Powys. Despite occasional disagreements with King John of England, Llywelyn maintained overall good relations, even marrying John's daughter Joan. He rose as the most powerful figure in Wales, forming crucial alliances and shaping Welsh politics until his passing in 1240.
