(Military personnel) Tran Ngoc Châu was a Vietnamese soldier, civil administrator, and politician in the Republic of Vietnam. Initially fighting for independence from the French with the Việt Minh, he later opposed Communism. Châu served in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, collaborating closely with President Ngô Đình Diệm. Renowned for his innovative counter-insurgency tactics during the Vietnam War, he transitioned to politics and was elected to the National Assembly. Châu was a proponent of peace and anti-corruption efforts, but was eventually imprisoned on charges of treason before escaping to America in 1979.
