Ivan Mazepa was a prominent Ukrainian military and political leader who served as the Hetman of the Zaporizhian Host and the Left-bank Ukraine from 1687 to 1708. He played a significant role in the Battle of Poltava by switching sides to support King Charles XII of Sweden, leading to lasting political repercussions in the histories of Russia and Ukraine. Despite being excommunicated by the Russian Orthodox Church, his reputation has been slowly restored in modern Ukraine, with a corvette of the Ukrainian Navy named after him.
