(Politician and Journalist) Symon Vasyliovych Petliura was a prominent Ukrainian politician and journalist who played a key role in leading the Ukrainian People's Republic during the Ukrainian War of Independence. He served as the Supreme Commander of the Ukrainian People's Army and was elected head of the military following the 1917 February Revolution. Petliura orchestrated a rebellion against the pro-German Ukrainian State in 1918, successfully reinstating the Republic. Subsequently, he led the socialist Directorate of Ukraine and forged an alliance with Poland during the Polish-Soviet War before seeking refuge in exile in Paris.
