Bohdan Khmelnytsky

Bohdan Khmelnytsky was a Ruthenian nobleman and military commander of Ukrainian Cossacks who served as the Hetman of the Zaporozhian Host. He led a successful uprising against the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, establishing an independent Cossack state in Ukraine. Khmelnytsky negotiated the Treaty of Pereiaslav with the Russian Tsar, forming an alliance between the Cossack Hetmanate and Tsardom of Russia. His leadership during the uprising included controversial events, such as the massacre of thousands of Poles and Jews, leaving a lasting impact on Ukrainian nationalism and history.
