Constantine the African was a respected physician in the 11th century who gained fame for his travels and linguistic abilities. He was well-known in Italy, especially in Salerno, for translating Arabic medical texts into Latin. Later in life, he became a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Monte Cassino. Constantine's translations of important Arabic medical works were widely used as textbooks throughout Europe from the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century.
