Maria Nyerere started her career as a teacher at Nyegina Primary School in Musoma before marrying Julius Nyerere, a prominent activist and politician who later became the co-founder and president of Tanzania. Currently, Maria Nyerere is a member of the council of elders of the Alliance for Tanzania Youth Economic Empowerment (Atyee) and is known in the Tanzanian media as Mama Maria.
