Pope Gregory III

Description: (Bishop of Rome)
Pope Gregory III was the bishop of Rome from 731 to 741. His time as pope was filled with difficulties, including dealing with Byzantine iconoclasm and the Lombard threat. Despite seeking assistance from Charles Martel against the Lombards, he was unsuccessful. Gregory III was the final pope to seek approval from the Byzantine exarch of Ravenna for his election. He was also the last pope of Syrian descent and the last non-European pope until the election of Pope Francis in 2013.
