(Bhikkhu) Walpola Rahula Thero was a prominent Sri Lankan Buddhist monk, scholar, and writer recognized for his significant contributions to Buddhism. He achieved a historic milestone as the first bhikkhu to hold a professorial chair at Northwestern University in 1964. He also served as Vice-Chancellor at Vidyodaya University, now the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Rahula Thero's writings in English, French, and Sinhala have been instrumental in fostering a deeper understanding of Theravada Buddhism. His book "What the Buddha Taught" is particularly noteworthy in this regard.
