Saṅghamittā was an Indian Buddhist nun who played a significant role in spreading the teachings of Buddha. Alongside her brother Mahinda, she traveled to Sri Lanka to establish the Bhikkhunī Sangha, the Order of Nuns, at the request of King Devanampiya Tissa. Recognized for her contribution to the propagation of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, she is revered for bringing a sapling of the Bodhi tree, which was planted in Anuradhapura. Her name became synonymous with the Buddhist Female Monastic Order of Theravāda Buddhism, established in Sri Lanka, Burma, China, and Thailand.
