(South African Rugby Union Player) John William Smit, a retired professional rugby union player, was the former CEO of the Sharks. He captained the Springbok rugby union team as their 50th captain, leading them to victory in the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Smit was renowned for his versatility, primarily playing as a hooker but also excelling as a prop. He retired from international rugby after the 2011 Rugby World Cup as South Africa's most-capped player.
